I met with S & R back in January to discuss their plans for their elopement at Greenlawn Cemetery. These two met online and found out that they actually worked in the same building in offices next to each other! They traveled all the way from Kentucky up here to Salem Massachusetts to get married at Greenlawn Cemetery with just a group of childhood friends and family members as witnesses.
Greenlawn Cemetery is a historic cemetery at located 57 Orne Street in Salem Massaschusetts. The cemetery was originally founded in 1807. The 100-acre cemetery is notable for its large number of specimen plants, which is second in the state to the Arnold Arboretum located in Boston. It has more than 6,000 burial plots, and is still in active use to this day. One of the reasons I love doing photoshoots and elopements here is because of the beautiful architecture of the chapel and many different scenic backdrops including bridges, a large pond and plenty of green space. The perfect spot for spooky couples to make it official.
It was a very cloudy and rainy morning, the day of their elopement. We were lucky that things turned around when it came time to the ceremony! Just a few clouds left in the sky. S & R chose to have a handfasting ceremony as part of their vows. Handfasting is the ancient Celtic practice of binding a couple’s hands during their wedding ceremony that expresses their commitment to one another. This tradition is used to symbolize the couple’s commitment to one another through this life and beyond.
After they said I do amongst friends and family, we took our time exploring the cemetery and finishing off the afternoon with some formal portraits.
Thanks for picking me to be your Salem elopement photographer <3
