A locals perspective on all things to do in downtown Salem! Whether you find yourself in Salem for a quick 24-hour visit or you plan to stay for an entire week, exploring downtown Salem will undoubtedly leave you with unforgettable memories. As a local, I’m excited to share some of my favorite food, activities, and hidden gems that will help you make the most of your time here! There’s always something to do whether you are here exploring solo or with your coven.
Start your day with a good cup of coffee from one of our local coffee shops. There are plenty of places to choose from, with a large selection of shops located on Derby Street. Jaho is the perfect place to grab a quick coffee or bite to eat! After your breakfast stop, take a leisurely stroll along Derby Wharf. Enjoy the enchanting morning views, feel the cool breeze, and take in all the beauty of the historic lighthouse at the end of the wharf.
After breakfast, head over to Salem Common, a picturesque park that offers a tranquil respite from the city’s hustle and bustle. Take a leisurely stroll or find a cozy bench to soak in the peaceful ambiance. Depending on when you are here, there may even be an event or two being held at the common! During the fall you can expect to see things on the weekends like the food truck festival, and Haunted Happenings!
For a dose of history, explore the Peabody Essex Museum. This renowned museum showcases a diverse collection of art and cultural artifacts, including works from Asia, Oceania, and even a stunning maritime exhibit.
Feeling hungry? Grab a quick bite at Ledger. This trendy restaurant prioritizes using fresh, locally sourced ingredients and offers a menu filled with innovative and sustainable options.
Take a Salem Trolley or go on a Ghost Tour to explore more sites around downtown! You can even take a self guided Hocus Pocus Tour, to see all the spots they filmed at from the first movie! Some spots include The Ropes Mansion, Old Town Hall, and Max and Dani’s House located at 4 Ocean Ave.
No trip to Salem is complete without visiting the Witch House. Formerly owned by Judge Jonathan Corwin, this historic landmark offers insight into the infamous Salem Witch Trials. Take a guided tour and immerse yourself in the eerie tales of the past. Be sure to take some selfies out front or contact me here to book a spooky session!
From there, if you haven’t already gone on your self guided Hocus Pocus tour, you can walk over to the beautiful gardens at the Ropes Mansion.
If you’re up for some retail therapy, browse the boutique shops along Essex Street. From quirky witchy boutiques to unique art galleries, you’ll find plenty of treasures to take home as souvenirs or gifts. Essex Street is the perfect stroll through Witch City! My favorite spot to get tarot cards read is at Crow Haven Corner, the oldest witch shop in Salem!
If you have the time to walk, or if you have access to a car, head over to The Willows. For those seeking a more vibrant and lively experience, the Salem Willows Arcade is so much fun, with dazzling lights and a playful atmosphere. With a plethora of arcade machines, Skee-Ball alleys, and classic carnival games, the Salem Willows Arcade offers endless hours of joy and amusement for young and old alike. Whether you’re strolling through the idyllic park or losing yourself in the whimsical realm of the arcade, a visit to Salem Willows promises an unforgettable experience that captures both the elegance of nature and the joy of play!
Indulge in a delectable dinner at Finz Seafood & Grill. Known for its fresh seafood selection, this waterfront restaurant offers breathtaking views of Salem Harbor. Savor the flavors of New England while out on their deck, and don’t forget to try their famous clam chowder.
For a casual bite and fun drinks, head over to The Roof. This rooftop bar is located on Essex St and has panoramic views of central downtown! The Roof is Salem’s only rooftop bar experience.
Entertainment for young and old, a stop that you cannot miss while visiting Salem is at Bit Bar. They have a large selection of arcade games, and some are often in rotation. You may have the chance to play something different each time you visit! Enjoy a video game inspired cocktail while you play pinball or air hockey with friends.
